Interesting data for Yahoo! Japan and Microsoft/Yahoo! deal

Eurotechnology.com sent an email detailing some information about the japanese operation that Yahoo! has. Yahoo! Japan has 100% profit margins. I always know that their operation in Japan was generating profit but never thought it was generating profit in this scale. Too bad (or good) this is not part of the deal.

Here is part of the email Eurotechnology sent to their subscribers:

Microsoft has offered US$ 44.6 Billion to acquire all outstanding shares of YAHOO Inc. Interestingly, Microsoft would actually only get about 72% of all of YAHOO for this money: all of YAHOO Inc + 33% of YAHOO-Japan. The remaining 67% of YAHOO-Japan (=28% of global YAHOO) will remain with current share holders and will remain traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange for the time being.

YAHOO-Japan is far more successful than YAHOO Inc. Assuming the same 62% Premium, Microsoft would be offering an additional US$ 28 Billion for the remaining 67% of YAHOO-Japan.

YAHOO-Japan is in much better shape than YAHOO Inc.: YAHOO Japan’s profit margin is close to 100%, while global YAHOO Inc’s profit margin is about 18%.

How to access the Baseboard Management Controller on Sun Fire T1000 and T2000

There is no way to access the BMC from Solaris using the servers Sun Fire T1000 and T2000. Sun is planning a scadm command to use with these CMT servers but until they release it you’ll need to run SUNWexplorer with a special parameter.

root@sunt2000 # /opt/SUNWexplo/bin/explorer -w Tx000

After the SUNWexplorer completes the gathering of your server configuration, go to /opt/SUNWexplo/output/<explorer filename>/Tx000 and check for the file you’re looking for more information. It has several information about your System Controller.

If you’re looking for a way to reset the ALOM password without powering down the server, it won’t be possible. You can follow these steps to recover TX000 ALOM Passwords

Wall Street Journal says that Brazil reached its tolerance to taxes

The Wall Street Journal declared that Brazil reached its tolerance to taxes. This article is very interesting because it paints the real status about taxes, government, corruption and reforms.

Notes to myself:

  • Risk agencies will want reforms to declare that Brazil reached investment grade
  • High taxes prevent higher economic growth
  • Bureaucracy serves as a political tool

How to access the Baseboard Management Controller on Sun servers

I was looking a way to access the SC within Solaris and I found that there is three commands to do it. They are: rscadm , scadm and lom. It depends of which server do you have and which software is providing the lights out management.

Here is a list of servers and their respective lights out management software – not sure if all lights out software can be used with rscadm, scadm or lom:

LOM

  • Sun Netra X1
  • Sun Netra T1400/1405
  • Sun Netra T1 AC200
  • Sun Netra T1 DC200
  • Sun Fire V100
  • Sun Fire V120
  • Sun Fire E2900
  • Sun Netra 20
  • Sun Fire V1280

ALOM – Advanced Lights Out Manager

Here is an example to show the network settings using rscadm:

root@localhost:/ # /usr/platform/`uname -i`/rsc/rscadm shownetwork
IP Address: 192.168.2.74
Gateway address: 192.168.2.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Ethernet address: 00:03:ba:8c:55:73

And with scadm:

root@localhost:/ # /usr/platform/`uname -i`/sbin/scadm shownetwork
IP Address: 192.168.2.3
Gateway address: 192.168.2.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Ethernet address: 00:14:4f:2b:90:09

Lack of updates

I’m still busy reading some documentation for Solaris 10 and I’m not updating this blog often enough.

I’ll update this blog with some widgets from other sites, like del.icio.us and anobii as soon as I learn some basic PHP skills.

So, how does Lotus Symphony looks like?

IBM released Lotus Symphony, an office suite built with the Eclipse Rich Client Platform for its User Interface and Open Office for the back end office code.

So, how does Lotus Symphony looks like? I don’t know, since the demo requires me to disable my pop-up blocker and try again. Hmmm, I’m not disabling or whitelisting any site to see a demo that I have little interest so I contacted IBM and sent them a message:

Could you make the Lotus Symphony Tour to not open a pop-up window?

I’m not disabling my pop-up blocker to see this product demo (which I still don’t know what’s different from OpenOffice).

If IBM decides to reconsider the approach for the Lotus Symphony demo, let me know through the email address provided.

Thanks,
Emerson Seiti Takahashi

Let’s wait and hope that IBM let me control the way that I view websites.

Gridzones – Web Hosting Review

This site is currently hosted at Gridzones. I purchased a VPS-1 plan, which is not available anymore.

There aren’t many reviews out there reviewing their service, so what’s their reputation? Gridzones is listed at BigAdmin portal and is based in Seattle. The uptime is close to 5 9s and they promised a minimum of 64MB of RAM memory for me and that’s why I was interested. I heard that webhosting companies are overselling their shared accounts, putting too many customers on a server.

Apparently it is a small company, since I got a response from the CEO for a sales question that I made. The question was  How much I will be charged if I use all my bandwidth in Solaris 10 VPS-1 (or all plans – thinking about future expansion)?  Bandwidth is $0.50/GB over the quota for your VPS.

The support tickets have a SLA of 24 hours and my four tickets were responded on time. My opinion: so far so good.
