Twitter and SMS international agreements for interoperability

I questioned Claro Brazil, my mobile phone carrier, why I can’t send messages to Twitter – +44 7624801423.

They answered that Claro has international agreements for interoperability with Argentina, Canada, Singapore, Colombia, Chile, El Salvador, Ecuador, Spain, Estonia, Guam, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, New Zeland, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Spain, Uruguay, Venezuela and United States.

So, no Twitter for me 😦

I also don’t get SMS from Facebook, Google Agenda. I wonder why…

GPhone – it still not impressive

With the news that Google is releasing a phone getting closer to a launch, I still believe that the GPhone still not impressive enough to change the mobile landscape.

But it does create a working mobile phone with the specifications that Google think is important in mobile phones.

How to make public authentication work in SSH

After you set up the public key authentication in any Unix server, if it keeps asking for your password even after you put your public key in the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file you need to check the file permissions.

To fix this problem, check if the owner and the file permission is set right on:
Home directory (700)
.ssh directory (700)
authorized_keys file (600)

Acer Aspire 5100-3959 restores with FAT32 file system

The Acer Aspire that I bought came with two partitions. One for the operating system and the other one for your data.

I recently restored my system and Acer’s restore disk converted the C: partition to FAT32. To convert it to NTFS, open a command prompt (under Start Menu, Acessories) and type the following command:

> convert c: /fs:ntfs

The type of the file system is FAT32.
Enter current volume label for drive C: ACER
Convert cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process.  Convert may run if this volume is dismounted first.
ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.
Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N) n
Convert cannot gain exclusive access to the C: drive,
so it cannot convert it now.  Would you like to
schedule it to be converted the next time the
system restarts (Y/N)? y
The conversion will take place automatically the next time the
system restarts.

Now reboot the system and it will convert the drive auomatically at the next boot.

Veritas Volume Manager – You don’t have permission to run

This is what happens when you try to run the vxdg command and doesn’t have permission.

username@hostname:/ $ vxdg list
vxvm:vxdg: ERROR: IPC failure: Permission denied

Received SSH_FXP_NAME packet with zero or multiple records – WinSCP

The problem “Received SSH_FXP_NAME packet with zero or multiple records” was manifested here with AIX and here what I did to solve it.

First I login to the machine with the ssh and use a regular user (root doesn’t count).
I entered the directory where the error is ocurring and listed it using ls -la. Check the current directory and up one level (. and ..). If it appear as ./.. Permission denied, do the following:
1. Umount the filesystem. If necessary, force it (umount -f /filesystem).
2. Check the permissions of the folder used by the mount point.
3. Mount it.
4. Check the permissions of the mount point.
5. List again inside the filesystem (ls -la) and check if the message (./.. Permission denied) appears again.

Try to connect again with WinSCP.

This problem manifested while using WinSCP. FileZilla wasn’t presenting this behavior.

Trying Xubuntu Linux distribution on my machine

I downloaded the Xubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft Desktop CD AMD64 version. It’s a LiveCD that boots directly into Xfce environment. No big deal up to here, it looks like Gnome.

There are two icons on the desktop. One of them is a hard drive and below is written Install. So I clicked on the icon. It asked the usual questions, like disk layout, keyboard used, date, time and timezone, language.

The installation didn’t successfully install. On the two attempts the installer crashed because there was no space left on device.

When I installed with a simpler disk layout, listed below:

  • /var – 200MB
  • swap – 500MB
  • / – Everything else.

the installer just installed the OS.
